Local & Wide Area Networking

Behind the scenes, your network is powered by a number of hardware and software solutions:

Switches or Hubs are an integral part of your Local Area Network [LAN]. They allow multiple desktop and laptop computers to connect to the (LAN), providing access to shared resources such as Printers and the Internet.

Routers are the devices which, when connected to the LAN via a switch or hub, can provide shared Internet access to all connected computers. They often feature Firewall technology protecting your internal network from unwanted intrusion from outside while also restricting unauthorised Internet access to those on the LAN.

Wireless Access Points can provide two main Data Networking solutions. Firstly, they could allow two separate LAN’s to be connected [without wires]. This may be useful if your company have offices separated by up to a few hundred yards and where no physical cables exist between the two offices. A pair of Wireless Access Points allow the two LAN’s to be connected thus providing shared resources between sites.

Having a Wireless solution integrated in your LAN can also be used to allow temporary users to connect to your LAN without a wired connection. i.e. using a Wireless Laptop computer or PDA.

PHI Systems can advise and assist in the implementation of any data networking solution. If you use more than one computer, you can benefit from networking your systems and sharing resources.
